Using MyOMaps to Create a Map (Android version only)

See the video below for an overview:
MyOMaps allow you to easily create a Geo-referenced Map from a photo or Image File.
  • Ensure you have an image file (eg a photo of the map) either on the SmartPhone or on your Google Drive (assuming you have internet access)
    • Currently the image file should be a Portrait image rather than Landscape (ie when you check the properties: Width should be less than Height)
  • Select the menu item “Create Map” from the main menu.
  • Select the Image file to load
                  - This can either be from your GoogleDrive, or
                  - From the storage on your Android
  • Place two pins on the image at prominent locations that you will be able to match on Google Maps
  • Place a pin by double tapping at the selected point. You can zoom in close to place the pin accurately
  • To undo - use the menu to select "Undo"
  • Once the two pins have been positioned - use the menu to select "Place Image"
  • Then on the Google Map, place pins at these matching points
  • In this case, pins can be placed with a single tap - and can be dragged after placing them
  • When the two pins are placed at the corresponding points - use to menu to select "Add Image"
  • The image is then positioned, scaled, and rotated to be a georeferenced map
  • To check the placement, use the menu to select "Transparency" and drag the slider the point where you can see both the overlay and the underlying Google Map
  • If you are happy with the image - use the menu to select either "Hold Image" to lock the image at that location; or "Save File" to save the image as a KMZ map file for future use
  • The file saves to the the location set as your current Maps/Courses file location (except if this is the MyOMaps Server which is read-only to users):
  • If you have selected "Local" (ie on main menu > Map & Course File Location > Local), then MyOMaps prompts you for a file name - AND THEN - prompts you to navigate to the folder on the device. It then saves the fil
  • If you have selected "Google Drive", MyOMaps prompts you for a file name and then saves the file in the "ao" folder of your GoogleDrive.
  • You could then view your recorded track on this map (or record a new track)
  • You can open the file on your PC using GoogleEarth. This will display the image correctly located, scaled and rotated.
  • Warning: Some kmz viewers do not support rotation and so show the image un-rotated which gives an incorrect map view. One such viewer is the viewer in GoogleDrive (ie if you open the kmz in GoogleDrive, rather than download to your PC and open it in GoogleEarh).
  • Remember, to save the map for future use (without having to go through the geo-referencing steps again), immediately after creating the map, select the "Save File" option.
